San Diego, CA. - The award winning, San Diego based Institute of Consumer Financial Education (ICFE) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense/Military Community and Family Policy to help improve the financial readiness of military service members and their families. The MOU allows personnel at military installations throughout the Department of Defense (DoD) to utilize the many financial education programs and web-based services provided by the ICFE including personal finance curriculums, PowerPoint shows, financial counseling, spending education, credit education and credit report reviews among numerous other resources and services.
The ICFE is an independent, national nonprofit organization founded in 1982 by the late Loren Dunton, who is credited with founding the financial planning industry and who created the very prestigious Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. The ICFE dedicated to helping consumers of all ages do a better job of spending, increasing savings accumulation and use credit more wisely.
The MOU between the two organizations is part of a DoD financial education initiative aiming to assist service members and their families in their efforts to build personal wealth through improved spending techniques and practices, reducing debt and establishing savings goals. By increasing personal wealth, service members are better able to achieve financial goals such as maintaining an emergency cash reserve, sending their children to college, purchasing a house after leaving the service and investing for retirement.
"The ICFE has been helping the military financial counselors for many years now with training programs and educational courses, brochures, an eNEWS and other helpful materials. Now, this agreement between ICFE and the Department of Defense makes it official and places the ICFE s programs and materials before all the of the military's personal finance management specialists (PFMS), worldwide," said Paul Richard, a Registered Financial Consultant (RFC) and the ICFE s executive director.
As part of the MOU, the ICFE is making its web-based personal finance curriculum, credit report reviews, credit file correction and other ICFE materials available to all PFMS, many of whom have already completed their training and have been certified as Credit Report Reviewers by the ICFE. The ICFE also has speakers and other presenters available who visit installations and speak to service members about their personal finances.
